Nonstop flights from the United States to Russia travel only to a Moscow airport, originating in New York or Los Angeles. Some flights, especially nonstop flights, may be scheduled only on certain days of the week. Depending upon your destination and the originating city, you may need to make more than one connection. Your best bet is to use Helsinki or Frankfurt, which have the greatest number of connecting flights.

As the single-most important transportation hub in the CIS, Moscow has several airports.

International Terminals

Sheremetyevo II Airport (SVO)

Most international flights arrive at this Moscow airport (PHONE: 095/956-4666 or 095/578-0101), which handles an estimated 11 million passengers a year. Built to cope with only 9 million passengers a year, you can expect lines everywhere and a wait of up to an hour or two at passport control.

Domestic Terminals

In addition to the international Moscow airport, the city has four domestic terminals.

Sheremetyevo I Airport (MOW)

(PHONE: 095/578-2372), some 30 km (19 mi) northwest of the city center, services domestic flights to St. Petersburg and the former Baltic republics (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania). It has also been handling the international flights of some new Russian airlines. The complex has an aerodrome, airport building with halls of departure and arrival, VIP-rooms and a luggage office.

Domodedovo Airport (DME)

(PHONE: 095/323-8565, www.eastline.ru/domodedovo), one of the largest airports in the world, is some 48 km (30 mi) southeast of Moscow. After a long renovation it is now probably the nicest airport in Russia. The Russian airline Transaero has left Sheremetyevo I for Domodedovo, and has been joined by Swissair and Sabena. “Domodedovo" airport, the biggest and most promising Moscow airport and takes the first place in domestic and international flights and goods transportations to Caucasus, Ural, Srednaya Asia, Siberia and Far East, central regions of Russia and CIS. At present there are flights to Europe, Asia, America, Egypt, China, Syria, Pakistan, OAE, India, Thailand.
The reconstructed Moscow airport "Domodedovo" is a modern passenger terminal offering its clients European class services. A four stars first class comfortable hotel "Domodedovo Air Hotel". Vnukovo Airport (VKO)

In the airport there are over 80 regular flights in Russia, to Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Germany, Bulgaria, Turkey.
The main runway meets all modern requirements, what ensures safety and regularity of flights.

Bykovo Airport (BKA)

(PHONE: 095/558-4738), the smallest of the domestic terminals, generally handles flights that travel within Russia and some flights to Ukraine.

Remember that in Russia, check-in officially ends 40 minutes before departure, and if you arrive late you may need to do some serious begging to be allowed onto the plane.
