Cheap Eats in Moscow

ANNUSHKA
Stops outside Chistyie Prudy metro station, Moscow, Russia
Phone: 095/961-3333

Housed on a tram that makes a constant loop around the picturesque Chistyie Prudy area in Moscow, Annushka is a cozy bar and eatery.

DONNA KLARA
21/13 Malaya Bronnaya, Moscow, Russia
Phone: 095/290-3848

A few minutes away from Patriarshy Prudy, Donna Klara's comfy window seats, laid-back staff, and selection of sticky cakes make this a cozy place to linger over a bottle of wine. The wine list may not be very big, and the reheated lasagna isn't a delight, but the friendliness makes it all seem like a family eatery in which to relax the afternoon away in Moscow. No credit cards.

Metro: Mayakovskaya.

DZHAGANNAT EXPRESS
11 Kuznetsky most, Moscow, Russia
Phone: 095/928-3580

This New Age café is the only respite vegetarians can get in the heavily meat-oriented diners in Moscow. Also known as the Center for Healthy Eating and Living, the restaurant has an Indian-inspired cuisine that is not very spicy by most people's standards. Apart from the curry, the huge salad bar is the best bet, along with the various tofu and dried wheat protein dishes. No alcohol is served (in keeping with the healthful eating ethos), although there is nonalcoholic beer, wine, and champagne. Otherwise try the beet-carrot juice. No credit cards.

Metro: Kuznetsky most.

YOLKI-PALKI PO…
18A Tverskaya ul., Moscow, Russia
Phone: 095/287-8127

Yolki-Palki Po… Choose your own ingredients, hand them over to a chef, and see them sizzle on hot Mongolian barbecue plates. Yolki-Palki Po… is a more proletarian fast food version of the normal Mongolian food experience. Situated in Moscow center-city on Pushkinskaya Square, diners eat in a glass building under tribal Mongolian banners. Salads, tasty Russian pies, and Central Asian soups are also on the menu, as is loud, not Mongolian, pop music. It is extremely popular, and lines form outside even in the dead of winter. No credit cards.

Metro: Pushkinskaya.

KHVANCHKARA

16/2 Lukov per. Moscow, Russia

Phone: 095/921-29-27

The underestimiated Georgian cuisine at this restaurant can easily tackle some of the popukar Moscow restaurants such as Genatsvale. The zakuski are a great start, and the rest of the meal will be even better. Enjoy wonderful Caucasian cuisine in Moscow in an informal setting.
