Moscow City – an Overview![]() Moscow city is the barometer and nucleus of the changes sweeping through Russia. Nowhere are Russia 's contrasts more apparent than here - ancient monasteries and ultra-modern monoliths stand side by side, and New Russian millionaires and poverty-stricken pensioners walk the same streets. The populace now prefer impromptu street markets to monothilic department stores, and the beautiful churches vandalised or abandoned during the Soviet era of hardline atheism are being lovingly restored. But the real flavour of this Moscow city is in its small nooks and crannies, each of them unique. Moscow city's origins as a symbol of Russian spiritual and political power go back 850 years. It reflects Russia 's state of flux in its day-to-day life, and when the winds of change start blowing, they blow through Moscow first. It may be difficult for Westerners to appreciate what an important place Moscow city holds in the Russian imagination as a symbol of spiritual and political power. Throughout much of its history the city was known as Holy Moscow and considered to be the “ Third Rome ” after Ancient Rome and Constantinople. As Russia enters the 21st century, development and reconstruction are at an all-time high. Parts of the city, especially within the Boulevard Ring , are now sparkling clean and well kept. Although the Russians are protecting most of their architectural heritage, they are also creating a new legacy in the form of skyscrapers, shopping malls, and churches. Many are designed to be harmonious with the ancient Russian style, but there are an increasing number of shockingly modern glass-and-steel office towers, particularly in central Moscow. The new century promises growth, excitement, and hurdles to overcome. Moscow city is ready. It is a city very much on the move and aims to offer the visitor interesting views of both the past and present of its mysterious mother country. Moscow city is a place to travel if you're up for adventure and exploration. It is not quite like Europe and not too similar to Asia either. Moscow city has it's own unique charm and aura that no other place on earth can offer. Travel to Moscow and see for yourself! |
